Abstract
This chapter reports the results of an investigation into the development and use of mathematical models for capacity planning during the last decade, in six nationalised industries — The National Coal Board, The Central Electricity Generating Board, British Gas, British Telecom, British Airways and British Rail.
I am greatly indebted to the members of the Operational Research and Planning groups of the six nationalised industries which I visited, while this paper was in preparation, who so generously gave their time to explain the working of their own industry and also to comment helpfully on an initial draft.
