Abstract

This chapter reports the results of an investigation into the development and use of mathematical models for capacity planning during the last decade, in six nationalised industries — The National Coal Board, The Central Electricity Generating Board, British Gas, British Telecom, British Airways and British Rail.

I am greatly indebted to the members of the Operational Research and Planning groups of the six nationalised industries which I visited, while this paper was in preparation, who so generously gave their time to explain the working of their own industry and also to comment helpfully on an initial draft. They are not of course responsible for any of the opinions which I have expressed.
