Abstract
The aims of this chapter are to examine the various ways in which the Soviet Union is able to project its economic power around the world, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and how the USSR compares with major Western economic powers in this regard. It will seek to answer the question whether the Soviet Bloc is likely to develop a sufficiently important position in the world economy to enable it to challenge the West in the realm of non-military power. Unlike previous chapters, the analysis used here will be made more from a global than from a Soviet viewpoint, so that we can see where the USSR fits into the world economic system.
The Soviet Union remains apart much of the world economy; the West is better able to offer trade, investment, and the transfer of technology.
