Abstract

There are wide disparities in the length of training in anaesthesia between different countries. In several countries with advanced health delivery systems, no independent formal assessment is used at all in anaesthesia. (WHO, 1978). This, however, may merely be a legacy of former attitudes. There is a steady trend to increase the minimum length of training: France now has a national examination: locally-based assessments are evolving into national ones in Germany and Norway and there is a strong possibility that an international assessment will be attempted by way of a European Diploma for trainees in other countries.
