Abstract

This essay reviews the energy situation as well as future prospects of the developing countries. It then discusses the determinants of the development of energy demand in order to assess the scope for demand adjustment to rising fuel prices and resulting balance-of-payments problems. Finally, the possibilities for adjustment on the supply side are investigated with the emphasis being placed on the financing requirements and potential financing sources for investments in the energy sectors of these countries.
