Nationalism in the Middle East: A Behavioural Approach
Harold Guetzkow, a pioneer in the art of man-machine international political simulation, lamented years ago that he had not been able to develop a scheme by which he could incorporate the nationalism variable in his simulation exercises (Guetzkow, 1963). Like so many other social scientists, he believed that few phenomena are more important than nationalism if one is to understand inter-state behaviour, but constructing an operationally useful definition of nationalism is apparently a most elusive task.
