Abstract

Good health is one of the most important factors contributing to individual welfare. It is an essential prerequisite for enjoyment of almost every other aspect of life. A high income or a good education yield little satisfaction to the chronically sick. And, at the extreme, ill health that leads to death will make all other sources of satisfaction irrelevant.
