Abstract
The subject of industrial conflict, and in particular the strike, continues to attract a great deal of interest in the UK. The pattern of stoppages experienced has been cited as a contributory factor in Britain’s relative economic decline (Caves, 1980; Prais, 1981) as well as her periodic trade and balance of payments difficulties (Thirlwall, 1979). Public concern has been fuelled by the existence of inflation and fears of a causal linkage between stoppages and substantial wage settlements.
