Abstract
In chapter 2 we introduced the concept of the two-dimensional rectangular coordinate system; we defined points in space as vectors, from which we were able to draw line segments between pairs of points. To be strictly accurate, a straight line (or line for short) in two-dimensional space is not a finite segment, but stretches off to infinity in both directions, and so we need to introduce ways of representing a general point on such a line.
