Abstract
Test plates are of fundamental importance in an optical factory since they act as basic workshop radius and spherometric standards. They are self-checking as far as their sphericity is concerned, because they are made in pairs and may be rotated or sheared with respect to each other and should show the same degree of contact in all relative positions. Their radius calibration is more difficult and this is dealt with separately later.
