Animal models of physiological, essential and parkinsonian-like tremors

  • Chapter
Movement Disorders: Tremor

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to review briefly and to summarise our work of the last decade in which we have studied animal models of tremor. By using different experimental approaches such as brain lesions, electrophysiological recordings and the use of tremogenic drugs like harmaline, we have been able to distinguish three types of experimental tremor and to study their neural mechanisms (Lamarre, 1979). First, a mechanism involving the olivo-cerebellar system generates a tremor at 8–12 Hz which might be regarded as a model of physiological or normal tremor. Secondly, a mechanism also involving the olivo-cerebellar system can generate a tremor at 6–8 Hz which shows some of the characteristics of the so-called essential tremor observed in human patients. Finally, a third mechanism at the thalamocortical level appears to generate a parkinsonian-like tremor at the frequency of 3–6 Hz.
