Abstract

As Isabella leaves the stage, the subject of her soliloquy appears before us, a real human Claudio trying to come to terms with death whilst maintaining a little hope of reprieve:

The miserable have no other medicine

But only hope:

I have hope to live, and am prepared to die. [iii i 2–4]
