Abstract
The adoption of the gas turbine for industrial applications became important in the early 1960s and the gas turbine is now firmly established as a prime mover for industry. Early installations used small gas turbines of up to 370 kW, mainly for military emergency generation. Emphasis on this type of unit has decreased and the market requirement has shifted towards larger units, some as large as 80 MW. Compact self-contained electrical power units remain a major application but medium-sized gas turbines are used in applications such as offshore oil rigs. Their compactness favours use there for driving compressors and pumps, and for electrical power.
