Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship of anxiety disorders to depressive disorders. Although there were a number of biological studies by the 1960s which suggested a possible biological basis for anxiety disorders, research interest in anxiety disorders waned as interest in depression grew in the 1970s. Thus, the findings of Jones and Mellersh (1946) that patients with anxiety disorders developed increased lactate in the blood after exercise and the findings of Pitts and McClure (1967) of panic attacks being induced by infusions of sodium lactate in patients with anxiety disorders did not result in intensive biological studies of anxiety during the 1970s.
