Abstract
Chile under the military regime that was installed following the overthrow of the Allende government in September 1973 is an extreme instance of what can be termed the false paradox of the new authoritarian state in Latin America. Paradox in that a politically all-pervasive state which ruthlessly crushed any form of serious dissent purported at the same time to withdraw from the economic sphere in order to allow complete freedom to the individuals as economic agents. False in that, as the more astute analysts of the Chilean experience have observed, the two elements are not only compatible but arguably require each other: political repression might be necessary for the operation of the doctrinaire free market model adopted.1
