Abstract

Amid the excitement engendered by the present-day emphasis on Elizabethan plays as scripts intended for theatrical performance, we must never forget that most are largely written in verse, and that it is still essential to treat them as dramatic poems too. As highly wrought, highly complex linguistic organisms, they require far closer attention than if they were entirely couched in the naturalistic speech of everyday urban life.
