Abstract

My dictionary defines a ‘trend’ as a ‘turning away in a specified direction’. From what are we ‘turning away’, and can we specify a direction in which we are moving? The first question is surely more easily answered than the second. I am going back a long way because historical perspective, however brief, will give greater emphasis to my main point, which is that the future regulation of the medical profession rests chiefly in the hands and minds of its members.
