Abstract
In the last few years several 16-bit microprocessors have become available. These were initially used only for special applications where both rapid calculations and high accuracy were called for, for example in critical control systems. As prices fell with increased production they were used in other areas, but they currently represent only a few per cent of the total microprocessor market.
