Abstract
This chapter compares the level, pattern and trend of British innovative activities with those of other countries, and analyses the degree to which national differences in innovative activities are related to one important aspect of national economic performance: shares of world manufacturing exports. We begin by discussing the problems and possibilities of measuring innovative activities.
We are greatly indebted to David Critchley, Stuart Gross, Kurt Hoffman and Mick McLean, all of whom contributed significantly to the data-gathering and analysis necessary for the preparation of this chapter. We also benefited considerably from Robert Cahn’s and Leslie Cook’s critical and constructive comments on an earlier draft.
