Bacterial polysaccharides

Part of the book series: Topics in Molecular and Structural Biology ((TMSB))

Abstract

In common with higher living organisms bacteria produce polysaccharides. These polysaccharides occur in a variety of locations in relation to the bacteria and their precise disposition may be used as a means of classification (Sandford, 1979). Intracellular polysaccharides are present inside the cell wall either as part of the cytoplasm or as part of the cytoplasmic membrane; cell wall polysaccharides form part of the cell wall; and exocellular polysaccharides are located outside the cell wall. One group of exocellular polysaccharides, known as the capsular polysaccharides, are covalently linked to the cell wall, forming a capsule, whereas others are secreted and unattached. Such exopolysaccharides are also an important feature of yeasts and moulds.
