Abstract

This paper is about the experience of twenty years of short-term forecasting at the National Institute of Social and Economic Research (NIESR), London, but I shall attempt toplace the narrative in the setting of developments of economic forecasting generally.

This article was completed in May 1978. Since then a number of further studies of different aspects of National Institute forecasting have been published. In the National Institute Economic Review, May 1979, there are two studies: D.R. Osborn, ‘National Institute Gross Output Forecasts: A Comparison with US Performance’, and F. Teal and D.R. Osborn, ‘An Assessment and Comparison of Two NIESR Econometric Model Forecasts’. NIESR Discussion Paper, no. 41, 1981, is a study by S. Brooks and K. Cuthbertson of ‘Economic Models and Economic Forecasts’. A condensed version of this paper was published in the National Institute Economic Review, February 1981.
