Abstract

Independent Television’s strength in programmes and finance during the latter half of the 1970s was greatly assisted by the non-occurrence of contractual upheavals scheduled for 1974 and rescheduled for 1976, so that while Lord Annan and his committee were examining the state of television and mapping its future, ITV and its viewers enjoyed the blessings of a reprieve. The wounds inflicted by the surgery of 1967 had healed and the next operation on a healthy patient was postponed until 1980. In a peak period of programme-making and a trough in the nation’s fortunes ITV provided the public with some comforting distraction from the impact of a faltering economy.
