Strategy for Controlling the Grinding Process by C.N.C.
This paper is concerned with the automatic control of the grinding process, with special reference to the obtaining of desired surface finish in typical industrial type of cylindrical grinding applications. Although CNC controlled grinding machines have been commercially available over a number of years, they still have the inherent inability to run unattended by the operator, under NC tape program control. Thus, the wheel may become loaded and may have to be redressed by the operator, chatter vibration may on-set, in which case depth of cut or feed and speed may have to be altered, the surface finish may have to be examined and inconsistency which might vary from component to component, may have to be overcome by taking further corrective actions such as redressing of the wheel and repeating the final finishing passes until the desired surface finish is obtained.
The paper describes the developed grinding strategy, which can be incorporated in the software of a CNC system or within a separate microprocessor in an outer adaptive control loop, which would automatically control the workpiece rotational speed, grinding wheel surface speed, feed rate and wheel redressing etc. for ensuring efficient grinding. This is achieved by the inprocess sensing, analysis and control of the grinding conditions using appropriately fitted transducers on the machine.
