Summary

This paper is concerned with various aspects of the economics of adaptive control systems and equipment as applied to typical applications in Metal Working industries. The background and current state of the art is presented. Main application areas of Adaptive Control are reviewed. Adaptive Control applications in turning, milling, drilling, grinding etc are briefly discussed. Data is presented regarding the expected improvements in productivity and potential cost savings.

Relevant advances in microelectronics are described and their impact on machine tool control and utilisation assessed. An economic model is developed for analysing the cost effectiveness of adaptive machine control systems. Simple performance parameters are introduced to enable rapiddetermination of the principle economic criteria for industrial capital investment and decision making relating to equipment purchase and production methods.
