Summary
Central Machine Tool Institute, Bangalore, has been propagating the principles of Group Technology in Indian Engineering Industries. Starting with single machine system, Group Technology has cone a long way and is being considered as a new integrated manufacturing philosophy in small and medium batch production. While designing Group Technology cells both long term and short term demand fluctuations and product-mix variations are to be considered to ascertain the stability of the cells. The analysis carried out for cell design could be made use of for establishing an effective machine tool replacement policy. this paper deals with the above aspects based on the studies carried out in a cross section of Indian industries.
