Regulatory properties of the pterin dependent hydroxylases: variations on a theme

  • Chapter
Function and Regulation of Monoamine Enzymes: Basic and Clinical Aspects

Abstract

I have previously discussed the idea that the 3 pterin-dependent hydroxylases — phenylalanine hydroxylase, tyrosine hydroxylase, and tryptophan hydroxylase, constitute a family of enzymes whose individual members share many properties, both physical and catalytic (Kaufman, 1974). It has been a useful notion because there have been several instances when the discovery of a regulatory property for one of the enzymes — often first with phenylalanine hydroxylase — has made it likely that this property would be shared by the others.
