Abstract

Tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme activity in peripheral vascular tissue was measured in vitro subsequent to decapitation, pentobarbital anesthesia and intravenous infusion with nitroprusside. Enzyme activity was elevated when animals were subjected to decapitation or intravenous infusion with nitroprusside. Prior administration of hexamethonium prevented the increase in enzyme activity. Intravenous infusion with nitroprusside also resulted in a reflex increase in heart rate, an elevation of tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme activity in the superior mesenteric ganglion and an elevation of compound action potential firing from the preganglionic splanchnic nerve bundle. These data suggest that tyrosine hydroxylase within sympathetic postganglionic neurons innervating vascular tissue is activated following increased efferent impulse flow.
