Early Arrhythmias and Primary Ventricular Fibrillation after Acute Myocardial Ischaemia in Relation to Pre-existing Coronary Collaterals

  • Chapter
Early Arrhythmias Resulting from Myocardial Ischaemia

Abstract

For more than 10 years our group has been performing acute experimental coronary occlusions in dogs to study the pathophysiological and therapeutic problems of myocardial ischaemia. These experiments have clearly shown that primary ventricular fibrillation (VF) after acute ligation of a main coronary artery depends not only on the potential size of the ischaemic area and such factors as general experimental conditions, operating technique, narcosis, site of ligation and whether the artery is abruptly or slowly occluded, but especially on the presence of functionally effective pre-existing coronary collaterals (Meesmann et al., 1970).
