Abstract
Powys’s writing career did not end with the great achievement of Porius, but it is hard not to feel that with Porius his work had its culmination. Although Atlantis, 1954, replaced Porius as Powys’s favourite book, there seems to be an absence of tension, the presence perhaps even of self-indulgence in the novel. This relaxation is a common factor in his last works, of which Atlantis is certainly the best.
