Abstract
Both Weymouth Sands and Autobiography were also written at Phudd Bottom and published in the USA, in 1934. Weymouth Sands is the last of Powys’s novels to deal closely with a rich, textured, contemporary environment. Publication of it in Britain was delayed as the novel had to be abridged and its locations disguised. Weymouth became Sea-Sands, Portland Shell-Back and the novel was published in London in 1935 as Jobber Skald. This was to avoid the possibility of more libel suits.
