Abstract

The exploitation of coal provided the first large-scale, low-cost source of energy and made possible the changes of the industrial revolution. Coal remained the dominant world energy source until the rapid growth of crude oil and natural gas production, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. However, the large reserves of coal world-wide ensure that, in the forthcoming era of energy shortage, coal will remain a crucially important energy source.
