Abstract
The native beech, Fagus sylvatica, still makes up about 5 per cent of the forest area in Britain, and among the hardwoods is exceeded in area only by oak. It is one of the few timber trees that grows successfully on chalk and limestone soils. Various copper, cut-leaved, and weeping varieties are common in parks and gardens, and beech is also used for hedging.
