Abstract

East Coast fever (ECF) kills at least half a million cattle annually in East and Central Africa. The disease is caused by the tick-transmitted protozoan parasite Theileria parva. T. annulata probably causes even greater losses in the Middle East, through Central Asia and India, but no drug is currently available to treat theileriosis effectively and there is no satisfactory small animal model for theileriosis.
