Abstract
Routine, hospital-based analytical laboratories, notably those of biochemistry and haematology, have sought the aid of computers to maintain and improve the quality of their analytical service as their workload has expanded. Over the past 15 years or more there have been many ventures, some with lavish resources, some very limited. Such has been the diversity of equipment used and the types of staff involved that there are almost as many different software systems as there are laboratories concerned.
