ECG Data Compression: Some Practical Considerations

In computer assisted reporting of electrocardiograms, it is necessary to store and transmit relatively large volumes of data. ECG signals recorded at the body surface are amplified and A/D converted at a rate of 500 samples per second. In a system presently under development at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, 10 body surface signals are simultaneously measured for 8 seconds. With an A/D resolution of 5 µV per bit, this provides 4.8 × 105 bits of information.
