It was in the spring of 1957, seven years before his death, that I first met Brendan Behan. He had come to the offices of his London publishers, Hutchinson, to deliver the manuscript of Borstal Boy. I knew little about him, except that he was the Irish author of an extremely good play, The Quare Fellow, and that he was the star of one of the most talked-about television interviews of 1956.
