Abstract
Dickens is not often thought of as a writer of short stories, but he published one or more Christmas stories annually from 1850 to 1867. The first of them, ‘A Christmas Tree’, appeared in Household Words on 21 December 1850; then, from 1851 to 1858, he published each year an Extra Christmas Number of that journal which included contributions by Dickens and others; and from 1859 to 1867 there appeared a series of Extra Christmas Numbers of All the Year Round. On several occasions Dickens co-operated with Wilkie Collins in the composition of a story — for example, in the final Christmas story, ‘No Thoroughfare’, in 1867. A number of the stories were dramatized, and Dickens made reading versions of seven of them (see below).
