Abstract
Like ‘Bliss’, ‘Je Ne Parle Pas Français’ was written at Bandol, France, in the early months of 1918. These stories were Katherine Mansfield’s courageous response to the knowledge that she was securely in the grip of a dreaded disease, tuberculosis. Different though they are in almost every other way, homosexuality is central to the themes of each. Throwing light on this preoccupation are Katherine’s tormented relations with Murry and Ida Baker.
