Abstract

Recently there has been a substantial increase in both the understanding and the use of portable compilers. These use some of the same ideas as the portability methods based on macro processors that were discussed in the last chapter. The availability of portable compilers both increases the number of high-level languages usable for portable programming and reduces the cost of compilers for any particular machine.
