Inflow from the Atlantic Ocean to the Polar Basin

  • Chapter
The Arctic Ocean

Abstract

A section through the Arctic Ocean (Figure 3.1) shows that below the upper cold low-salinity lid lies a vast mass of water of nearly uniform salinity, comprising over 90% of the water in the basin. This water has been recognised since Nansen’s time as having its origin in the Atlantic, and indeed the Arctic Ocean is fundamentally a mediterranean sea of the North Atlantic.
