Abstract
Recent international crises involving energy and raw material resources have prompted recognition that today’s known reserves cannot continue to satisfy a rising demand for raw materials and energy, particularly oil. At the same time, recognition of the need to alter priorities of raw material and energy use has prompted conscious limitation of consumption and an expansion of recycling. The use of potential raw materials and energy resources in relatively inaccessible Arctic areas may soon become reality despite the investment required. In this context the great potential for raw materials and energy resources in the Arctic deserves increased attention.
