Abstract

In the previous volume (Chapter 34) an attempt was made, by using a random dipstick, to convey an overall impression of the itv programmes which by sheer novelty captivated viewers in the years following the introduction into Britain of competitive television. By the sixties itv had become a normal part of most people’s lives, providing frequent pleasure and occasional offence to millions, and programme references in this volume are related more closely to developments which occurred in cry policies as the system evolved. An illustrated book charting the general programme story of itv in chronological sequence was published in I98o entitled 25 Years on ITV 1955–19801 and makes evocative reading.
