Abstract
Conspicuous absentees from the list of fourteen unions with which the ITA negotiated were the BBC Staff Association — conspicuous because, after all, they were the only union so far recognised by the BBC as representative of television workers, as well as those in radio, since 1946. An attempt had been made in 1952 by those in the union who could foresee a possible end of the monopoly to secure a change of name, but the proposal did not receive sufficient support. In the event a change in title to the Association of Broadcasting Staff became imperative early in 1956; indeed it was overdue because by this time they were well on the way to losing the foothold they had established in the companies.
