Summary
By means of a quick-drop-cutter device, many specimens of the chip root formed under various cutting conditions were obtained, and these specimens were polished and etched. On these specimens, the geometric parameters of B.U.E. were measured. Then, the relation between the B.U.E. and cutting conditions were found. It was pointed out that the effect of cutting conditions on the height and overhang of B.U.E. is due to their effects on cutting temperature. According to the results of measurement, the cutting temperature corresponding to the max, height and max. overhang of B.U.E. is about 280–295°C, and that corresponding to disappearance of B.U.E. is 500°C and above. It seems to the author that the cause of influence by the cutting temperature on the B.U.E. is the dependence of strength and hardness of work piece material on the temperature
