Abstract
The present study is concerned with the heat transfer during hot upsetting in heated dies with a die temperature in the range of 600–800C and the initial billet temperature in the range of 900–1100C. Experiments were performed with flat dies heated by a furnace with temperature controlled by means of thermocouples inserted in the dies. The billets were circular cylinders heated in a separate furnace. The specimen temperature was recorded during the whole cycle of heating up, transfer in between the dies and pressing. The system die — lubricant — billet was modelled with a Finite Element mesh to study the temperature distribution with time. The influence of lubricant, initial die and billet temperatures were studied and compared with the experimental results.
