Concentration and Mergers

In this chapter we shall be concerned with the structure of the building society industry, and of the dominance of the building societies in the mortgage market. Trends in the concentration of the industry will then be set against the evidence of efficiency of different societies, and this will lead us to consider the motivation for mergers between societies.
