Abstract

In his Hypochondriack essay ‘On Time’, Boswell remarks upon the most ‘melancholy and discouraging’ of the operations of time:

It is plain then, that we are not only persuaded of the existence of time, but of its existence and powerful activity. Such indeed is its activity, that there is nothing material upon the face of the globe, but what its progressive operation will progressively make as if it had never been. (BC, p. 327)
