Conclusion: Byron and Europe

Abstract

Professor Douglas Dakin, in his brilliant “Historical Background”, a comprehensive yet succinct account of the revolutionary and counter-revolutionary ideas and movements in Europe from 1788 to 1848, provides an excellent introduction for the several national accounts of Byron’s political and cultural relevance to the European countries surveyed in this symposium. Dakin’s profound scholarship and prestige, as a leading authority on the diplomatic history of nineteenth century Europe, make his historical introduction invaluable and indispensable to the purpose of the symposium: a survey and assessment of the political and cultural relevance and influence of Lord Byron in nineteenth century Europe.
