Abstract
The binding properties of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are amongst the best characterised of those of any receptor system. However, despite our detailed knowledge of the properties of the binding site, particularly in the brain (Hulme et al., 1978; Birdsall et al., 1978, 1980b; Galper et al., 1977), and despite the identification and characterisation of a plethora of responses elicited by muscarinic agonists in whole cells and tissues (Birdsall and Hulme, 1976), the nature of the membrane macromolecules with which the receptor interacts directly has, until recently, been more a matter for speculation than of firm evidence.
