Abstract

From The Diary of Beatrice Webb, vol. III: 1905-1924, ed. Norman and Jeanne MacKenzie (London: Virago, 1984) p. 154. The extract below is taken from the entry for 7 March 1911. The Webbs were to begin a journey round the world in June and Sidney had suggested that he stand down from the Fabian Executive during their absence. Thereupon Shaw, who was not alone in feeling that the Society had drifted since the Wells episode, suggested that he and the other long-serving members should retire too (Shaw had been on the Executive continuously since 1885). In the event Webb stood and topped the poll in the April elections, but Shaw, Hubert Bland (in poor health) and three others did retire.
