Abstract
Three-quarters of the world’s population live in developing countries. About a fifth of the population in these countries is represented by preschool children who bear the main brunt of malnutrition. It has been estimated that in 1966, of the 667 million children under 14 years living in developing countries, 269 million were undernourished (Bengoa, 1970). A review of surveys conducted in 24 developing countries between 1966 and 1969 indicates a range of 0.5–7.6% for severe protein-energy malnutrition and 4.4–43.1% for moderate malnutrition (Bengoa, 1970).
We are guilty of many errors and many faults, but our worst crime is abandoning the children, neglecting the fountain of life. Many of the things we need can wait. The child cannot. Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made and his senses are being developed. To him we cannot answer ‘Tomorrow’. His name is ‘Today’.
